Most of us were never taught what to do with feelings (including pleasant ones). We were not taught how to relax into them and stay present with them long enough for them to be processed and integrated, for their core insights and messages to be received.
Instead, we learned to suppress them, distract ourselves from them, push through them, numb them, intellectualize them, talk about them, analyze them, or get stuck in them. While each of these approaches has its time and place, they are usually subtle ways of resisting or rejecting our feelings rather than welcoming them — and in doing so, they interrupt the very process our emotions were designed to complete. Feelings do not cause us to suffer; repressing them does.
There is a better way. A way of relaxing into our feelings, staying present with them, and allowing them to complete the natural process they were designed to complete. It is healing. It is freeing. And it is a skill anyone can learn.
